ABOUT
Dr. Shelli Deskins is a child psychologist who received her undergraduate degrees in psychology and social work from the University of Kentucky where she first learned about and provided in-home applied behavior analytic programming for children diagnosed with ASD. She went on to pursue her Master’s and Ph.D. in clinical psychology at Auburn University where her clinical training centered on developmental disabilities, trauma, and Parent Child Interaction Training (PCIT). She completed her clinical internship at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center in the areas of child abuse and neglect and PCIT. Dr. Deskins went on to complete two postdoctoral fellowships, the first being research-based training at West Virginia University and the second being clinical training at the University of Kentucky School of Medicine. She then joined the clinical faculty at the University of Kentucky College of Medicine, Department of Family and Community Medicine in Hazard, Kentucky as Assistant Professor where she treated patients and trained medical residents.
From 2009-2015, Dr. Deskins established and directed the Highlands Center for Autism, the first center-based Applied Behavior Analytic program in the state of KY created in conjunction with the Cleveland Clinic Center for Autism. During this time, she served as Vice Chair of the Kentucky Applied Behavior Analyst Licensing Board (2010-2012) and as chair from 2012-2014. Dr. Deskins then joined Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center (CCHMC) in 2015 where she worked in the Division of Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics (DDBP) until 2022. At CCHMC, she saw children with developmental disabilities who had mild to moderate behavioral concerns on an outpatient basis and provided inpatient services for children with more severe behavioral issues. Dr. Deskins also provided PCIT, Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT), and emotional regulation services. She also spent several years providing speech-psychology co-treatment sessions with CCHMC Speech Language Pathologists.
Dr. Deskins’ approach to treatment is generally behavioral/cognitive behavioral and her approach to care emphasizes the patient’s and family’s strengths. She works collaboratively with families to meet them where they are. Dr. Deskins tends to collaborate frequently with other providers on your child’s team, including physicians, nurse practitioners and speech-language pathologists in order to provide the best possible care. Typically, younger children and their caregivers are seen together, as adult involvement is often essential.
When she is not at work, she enjoys spending time with her family and friends. She is also interested in nutrition and fitness. Families frequently inquire about her accent, as she is originally from eastern Kentucky.
